The Philadelphia Dance Projects’ finale to its 25th season will be the premiere of a full evening choreographic work  “softly as i leave you” created by Tommie-Waheed Evans for his company waheedworks. This new work is made possible by a grant from the Dance Program of the National Endowment for the Arts. Building from his fellowship work with Center of Ballet and the Arts and his research at Jerome Robbins Library of Dance, Guggenheim award winning choreographer,Tommie-Waheed Evans explores the nuances and intersections of desire, love, longing, and survival.  softly, as I leave you is the result of a two-year collaborative journey inspired by a series of research projects which included digital documentation, improvisational dreaming, exploratory conversations with performers, and dialogue with master choreographer Donald Byrd. Evans forms multiple through-lines of Black modes of being, “poly-temporal futurity, and reimagined utopias by way of detailed movement explorations that seek to re-render landscapes of grief and strife.” softly, as I leave you seeks to offer a world comprised of reluctant difficulty with an end goal of endless beauty.
